The Reverend Dr. Christine Y. Wiley serves with her husband Dr. Dennis W. Wiley at the Covenant Baptist Church in Washington D.C. Covenant was the first black Baptist congregation in the Washington metropolitan area to call a husband and wife team to serve together as pastors sharing equal authority and responsibility. The call was extended on February 22, 2004 and became effective April 18th of this same year. The Wiley's who have been married for twenty-four years, served as pastor and assistant pastor for nineteen of their twenty-three years of service at Covenant Baptist Church.
Dr. Wiley has served in pastoral ministry for over 25 years and has a heart for helping people to become all God would have them to be. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and has been able to use her mental health background in various creative ministry initiatives and pastoral care modalities. She developed a clergy candidate evaluation process at Covenant, which includes Pastoral Assessment in readiness for Ministry, Spiritual Formation Appraisal, and Psychological Testing. She formerly served with the Washington Diocese of the Episcopal Church in the clergy assessment process. As pastor, Dr. Wiley is very involved in the Washington DC community. She serves as a member of the Strategy Leadership Team of the Washington Interfaith Network.
Reverend Wiley received the Doctor of Ministry Degree in Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy in 1994 from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. She has been able to bring pastoral care and counseling together with her background in Psychiatric Nursing to benefit the Body of Christ. She has served as the Coordinator of Field Education and Instructor in Pastoral Care and Counseling at the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C. She currently serves as Director of Field Education at the Howard University Divinity School of the same city. Dr. Wiley obtained the Master of Divinity degree and Bachelor of Science from Howard University, and a Diploma in Nursing from the Freedman's Hospital School of Nursing.
Publications by Dr. Wiley include "A Ministry of Empowerment: A Holistic Model for Pastoral Counseling in The African American Community", The Journal of Pastoral Care; "A Womanist Journey" in The Journal of Feminist Thought; and she co-authored a chapter entitled, "Psychotherapy with members of African American Churches and Spiritual Tradition" in the Handbook of Psychotherapy and Religious Traditions. Dr. Wiley also has a sermon included in Those Preaching Women: A Multicultural Collection, edited by Dr. Ella P. Mitchell.
Reverend Wiley was licensed to the gospel ministry in 1983, and ordained in 1986. She has a passion for loving and serving Jesus with everything that is in her. As one who once was "lost, but now is found", she has dedicated her life to be continually transformed so that she might be used to help others avail themselves to the transforming power of God.
In addition to her husband, the loves of her life include her children Aiyana, Samira, and Joshua, and her four grandchildren Asante, Akaiya, Akina, and Addae.
